Distributed Team
Definition: A team whose members work from multiple physical locations.
What it is
A distributed team is any team whose members are not co-located. The term is broader than 'remote' — a team can be distributed across two offices, or fully remote across 10 time zones. Distributed teams require explicit infrastructure for written communication, async decision-making, and a single source of truth for projects and customers.
Why it matters
Even non-remote-first companies are increasingly distributed: 28% of US workers were full-time remote in 2025 vs 7% in 2019 (BLS, 2025). The org-design playbook is now mainstream.
