Knowledge Base

Definition: A searchable repository of a team's documentation, runbooks, and institutional knowledge.

What it is

A knowledge base is the system of record for what a team knows: how-to docs, runbooks, decisions, FAQs, onboarding material. Historically these lived in wiki tools (Confluence, Notion). Increasingly the knowledge base is just one module of a broader workspace, alongside tasks, CRM, and chat.

Why it matters

A team without a searchable knowledge base re-asks the same questions in chat forever. The knowledge base is what makes async work scale.

Layer UI in context

Layer UI's docs module is the team's knowledge base — and it's searchable in the same query that returns chat messages, tasks, and CRM records.
