Shadow IT
Definition: SaaS tools adopted by individuals or teams without IT/finance approval — invisible in the official stack inventory.
What it is
Shadow IT is the collection of unsanctioned SaaS tools running in an org. It emerges because individual workers move faster than procurement: someone needs a tool today, expenses it personally, and it never enters the official inventory. Shadow IT creates security risk (unmanaged accounts) and procurement risk (overlapping subscriptions).
Why it matters
Consolidating onto fewer, more capable workspaces is the most effective shadow-IT mitigation — most shadow tools are filling gaps in the official stack.
Layer UI in context
Teams that adopt Layer UI typically retire 2–4 shadow-IT subscriptions (a personal CRM, a private Notion, a side chat tool).
