Team Chat

Definition: Persistent, channel-based group messaging used by teams for day-to-day coordination.

What it is

Team chat is the category Slack popularized: persistent channels (org-wide, team, project, social), DMs, threads, file attachments, search. Team chat replaced internal email as the default for fast async coordination at most modern companies. The category has expanded into bundled-with-everything-else workspaces.

Why it matters

The average remote worker sends ~37 chat messages per day (Asana, 2024). Where those conversations live determines whether they connect to the customers, projects, and docs they're about.

Layer UI in context

Layer UI's team chat sits next to the CRM, tasks, and docs — so a message about a customer can become a CRM note with one click.
