How to onboard a new team member to Layer UI

Estimated time: 2 hours of setup; first week of ramp · 7 steps

Bad onboarding is the #1 reason remote hires churn in their first 90 days. Layer UI centralizes onboarding into one workspace — no more emailing the new hire 8 different login links across 8 tools. This guide is the playbook.

  1. Step 1

    Send the workspace invite

From workspace settings → Members → Invite, enter the new hire's email. Pick their role (Member or Admin) and the channels/projects they should see by default.

  2. Step 2

    Add to onboarding channel

Auto-add to a #onboarding-{name} private channel where the manager and buddy can drop links and answer questions in one thread.

  3. Step 3

    Share the onboarding doc

Each Layer UI workspace should have a pinned 'Onboarding' doc covering org structure, communication norms, key tools, and the 30/60/90 plan. Link it in the welcome message.

  4. Step 4

    Assign first-week tasks

Create 5-7 first-week tasks (read the strategy doc, attend a customer call, set up local dev, ship a small fix). Layer UI tasks let you assign with due dates and AI-suggested next steps.

  5. Step 5

    Schedule recurring 1:1

Add a recurring 1:1 channel between manager and new hire. Drop async updates and weekly wins here so the cadence is documented.

  6. Step 6

    Pair on a real customer

Add the new hire as a viewer on 2-3 active CRM deals so they see real customer context from day one.

  7. Step 7

    30-day check-in

At day 30, run a structured retro on the onboarding experience. Update the onboarding doc with anything that was unclear.

Outcome

New hires reach productive contribution in the first 2 weeks instead of the first 2 months. Tribal knowledge becomes documented knowledge.
