Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Definition: The practice of optimizing content so AI search engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini) cite it.

What it is

Generative engine optimization is the AI-era successor to SEO. Where SEO optimizes for blue-link rankings, GEO optimizes for being cited inside AI-generated answers. Tactics include front-loading direct answers, using structured tables, including citable statistics with sources, publishing llms.txt files, and using Schema.org markup the AI systems read.

Why it matters

AI-driven search is a fast-growing share of total search; products that aren't cited in AI answers are invisible to that traffic.
